NameCheap Steals Spotlight Amidst GoDaddy Elephant Hunt Outrage

April 6, 2011

Amidst all the controversy last week surrounding the Bob Parson’s elephant hunt video, there was one savvy registrar who decided to take advantage of the public out cry.  Discount domain name registrar Namecheap started a campaign which gave customers who switched registrars a huge discount.  The $4.99 transfer price point was lower than the actual cost the registrar pays. Namecheap doubled-down on the deal by also agreeing to donate $1 for every transfer to the Save The Elephants Fund. All said an done , the company added 0ver 20,000 new domains to their customer base.

Other stories point out that the domains were “poached from Godaddy” but the deal was so good that it’s likely that transfers came from a wide variety of registrars.  NetworkSolutions tried to join in on the effort and offered a $6.99 similar “move from Godaddy” type of deal, but Namecheap.com clearly out-did them with such a low price.

The NameCheap crew seem to be vary swift on their toes with marketing.  When DNN posted an April Fool’s post about donating to Save The Kittens, company exec Richard Kirkendal posted on our comments and actually turned our spoof in to a real deal.

The company is now receiving some well-deserved attention from mainstream media. CNBC just put up a story and Namecheap execs have told us that they were also speaking with CNN.   UPDATE: Kirkendal gave us some more links to several other stories mentioning their promotions at Time.com, BBC and BusinessInsider.com . . . Great work guys.
